Living in Southbank can be an experience to behold. It is a truly amazing region. But just because it's an amazing location, it doesn't mean that living life there is simple. Busy schedules, appointments and the constant stream of social occasions frequently mean that our homes unfortunately end up neglected. Whilst many have experienced this, We at Sparkle and Shine believe that you shouldn't have to compromise on essentials in life.

Before European settlement, the area now called South Melbourne was a series of low lying swamps inhabited by Aboriginal tribes. The area was not developed until 1835 when Melbourne was established on the opposite bank of river. However, shipping used berths west of Queens Bridge to access the river. St Kilda Road, connecting to Princes Bridge, was developed as the major thoroughfare to the southern suburbs of Melbourne on the east side, and the track from the shipping piers of Port Melbourne to the city was formalised as City Road. After the Port Melbourne railway line was built across the area in 1854, the swamps were filled and the land, still much of which was in government hands, was developed as an industrial area. In 1888 the rail line was rebuilt, including the present Sandridge Bridge, and in 1890 Queensbridge was built creating another access to City Road, allowing cable tram access to Port Melbourne. By this time the riverside west of Queensbridge was lined with wharves and shipping sheds and maritime businesses including the Duke & Orr drydock, now housing the Polly Woodside maritime museum (this small area including the Exhibition Centre was separated off as its own suburb southwharf in 2008). Princes Bridge was rebuilt in 1888. This allowed cable trams to reach the southern suburbs of St Kilda Road. The road also raised the river’s edge. There were gardens on either side, the Snowden Gardens.

The area was home to a wide variety of industries and warehousing. These included low-scale shed-like light industrial buildings but also heavy engineering works like Austral Otis elevators at Kings Way (formerly Hannah Street), multi-level store houses like the Tea House on Clarendon Street as well as Castlemaine Brewery. By 1940 businesses included the Allen’s Sweet factory opposite Flinders Street Station (with its famous animated neon sign), the Malvern Star bicycle works, and numerous car sales and maintenance businesses. The Victorian Arts Centre, which is now the Victorian Arts Centre, was transformed into an entertainment precinct. It included the Green Mill dance hall, circus site, large cinema, and the Glacarium Ice Skating rink on City Road. In the 1920s the YMCA was built where City Road joined St Kilda Road, and in the 1960s two high rise office towers were built between City Road and Allen’s. The National Gallery of Victoria opened in 1968 to replace the amusement area. The Arts Centre was eventually open in the early 1980s. In 1987 the elevated Westgate Freeway was extended to Kings Way, and by 1999 was extended to join the Citylink tunnels, carving a line across Southbank with a large area occupied by off ramps.

St Kilda Road was soon lined by a number of important institutions, including the Police Barracks and Prince Henry’s Hospital. It also contained amusements such as a circus and dance halls where the Arts Centre is now.

In the 1980s the “give the Yarra a go’ campaign was intended to create public awareness of the possibilities of making the south bank of the river a more useful part of the city, rather than the city ‘turning its back’ on the river. The Planning Minister Evan Walker began planning towards this goal. The first projects were the construction a footbridge, now known as Evan Walker Footbridge. It was designed by CocksCarmichael Whitford and the Southbank Promenade by Denton Corker Marshall. They opened in 1990. The two projects together won the RVIA Urban Design Award in 1991.

You can book a service by calling our friendly staff on 03 9088 3118 or by filling out the booking form on our website. Just enter your Postcode, add the the details of the service, select a date and time and we'll do the rest.

What will a standard cleaning service include?

Every standard clean that we do is a whole house clean covering all areas including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, lounge & living rooms, laundry. You can choose to include add-ons to your clean such as oven cleaning, cleaning inside the fridge, and carpet cleaning and a range of other add-ons. What if I only want parts of my house cleaned?

In our booking form you can select to remove rooms from the clean if you dont want them included.
If your house is 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms select this initially, then tick the Part House Cleaning Only check box. You can then choose areas of you house you want to remove from the service.

Do I need to be present during the clean?

No you don't need to be home during the service.

Some customers do like to be home for the whole clean, some prefer to meet their cleaning professional first then get them to lock up when they are done.

As long as our cleaners have clear instructions on how to gain access into your home, we will take care of the rest. Many of our customers prefer to schedule their clean during the workday, so they can come home to a sparkling clean house.

Can I cancel anytime or is it an ongoing contract?

There are no lock in contracts with Sparkle and Shine. You are free to cancel or reschedule whenever you want so long as its not within 48 hours of a booking.

Last minute cancellations and reschedules cause our cleaning professionals to lose valuable work hours. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please do so at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation fees.
