Before the establishment of Melbourne, the area had been inhabited by the Wurundjeri tribes. In the 1840s European settlers named it the Parish of Boroondara – meaning “a place of shade” in the Woiwurrung language. Dight, a German explorer who had just returned from Heidelberg, decided to locate a water-powered grist mill on a site near the falls. The impressive three-storey mill was completed in 1840.

John Hodgson set up a squatters’ run at Studley Park on the eastern bank the Yarra River in 1840. Studley House, also known as Burke Hall, built in 1857, was named after Hodgson’s birthplace of Studley, Yorkshire and the house is now on the Register of the National Estate. The house was built in the Victorian Period Italianate Revival style. Modifications were made to the house in 1875 and 1919. John Wren, an influential Irish-Catholic millionaire and former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist and lobbyist, also owned the house. The land developer T. M. Burke donated it to Xavier College. It illustrates the importance of a residence in indicating success and status in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Melbourne society. The nearby Villa Alba, built before 1863, is open to the public.

In 1851, Crown land sales occurred in the area. Nicholas Fenwick was one of the buyers. He subdivided his land, which was located just outside the centre of Melbourne than the area now known as Richmond. He named the region Kew based on the idea that Kew in England was close to Richmond. He also notably named its streets after British statesmen. The area quickly became a desirable suburb for the wealthy in Melbourne. Originally, access to Kew was via Bridge Road in Richmond. This bridge crossed the Hawthorn Bridge to Burwood Road. In 1857, the Studley Park Bridge, which was privately owned and nicknamed the Penny Bridge, opened. It connected Church Street Richmond to Studley Park.

The commercial precinct known as Kew Junction began to take shape in the 1850s. Mr. J. J. French opened the first store in August 1853, and the first post office was opened on October 6th 1856. However, many shops started to appear in High Street towards the end of the decade. The Kew Hotel was opened in 1855. The Prospect Hill Hotel (now Dan Murphy’s liquor store), opened in 1857. The Council Hotel opened in 1860. The Clifton (now Hotel Kew), opened in 1869. Greyhound, now the Skinny Dog Hotel, opened in 1874. The block of civic buildings comprising the former post office, the former court house and the former police station were built in 1888 as was the National Bank, at the corner of Walpole and High Streets.

How do I book a house cleaning service?

You can book a service by calling our friendly staff on 03 9088 3118 or by filling out the booking form on our website. Just enter your Postcode, add the the details of the service, select a date and time and we'll do the rest.

What will a standard cleaning service include?

Every standard clean that we do is a whole house clean covering all areas including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, lounge & living rooms, laundry. You can choose to include add-ons to your clean such as oven cleaning, cleaning inside the fridge, and carpet cleaning and a range of other add-ons. Feel free to leave additional notes in your account during checkout, or contacting us to provide instructions for the cleaners.

What if I only want parts of my house cleaned?

In our booking form you can select to remove rooms from the clean if you dont want them included.
If your house is 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms select this initially, then tick the Part House Cleaning Only check box. You can then choose areas of you house you want to remove from the service.

Do I need to be present during the clean?

No you don't need to be home during the service.

Some customers do like to be home for the whole clean, some prefer to meet their cleaning professional first then get them to lock up when they are done.

As long as our cleaners have clear instructions on how to gain access into your home, we will take care of the rest. Many of our customers prefer to schedule their clean during the workday, so they can come home to a sparkling clean house.

Can I cancel anytime or is it an ongoing contract?

There are no lock in contracts with Sparkle and Shine. You are free to cancel or reschedule whenever you want so long as its not within 48 hours of a booking.

Last minute cancellations and reschedules cause our cleaning professionals to lose valuable work hours. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please do so at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation fees.
