In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800-81) purchased 5,120 acres (2,070 ha) of Port Phillip land at PS1 per acre, site unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Dendy arrived on 5 February 1841 to claim his land. Dendy’s Special Survey was the name of the area.
The area Dendy was forced to take, “Waterville”, was bound to the coast to the west by the present-day North Road, East Boundary Road, and South Road. In mid-1841, a town was surveyed. It was defined by the crescent-shaped street layout that still exists today. Subdivided lots were also offered for sale. The area was soon called “Brighton Estate”, while Dendy’s home site was named “Brighton Park”. The land didn’t have water readily available. The initial sales were slow and Dendy’s plan for emigration and land sale failed. His agent Jonathan Binns Were (1809-1885), who had arrived in Melbourne 1839, purchased the land. He died a pauper.
After the depression, land sales led to Brighton becoming the third-most populated city in the Port Phillip District (after Portland and Melbourne) by 1846. Brighton attracted wealthy residents who wanted generous building sites and the prospect of sea bathing. By the late 1840s stately homes were built in an area known as ‘The Terrace’, now called the Esplanade, overlooking Dendy Street Beach. The Brighton Post Office opened on 19 April 1853.
St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Brighton, one of the earliest churches in Victoria, was founded in 1842. The Wesleyan and Catholic churches were followed by 1848 and a Methodist church was added in 1851. Schools were opened on the Anglican Church land (1849), and by the Catholic Church at Centre Road (1850). Another one was opened in the Wesleyan Church, 1855. Brighton had 2,731 inhabitants in 1854.

Every standard clean that we do is a whole house clean covering all areas including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, lounge & living rooms, laundry. You can choose to include add-ons to your clean such as oven cleaning, cleaning inside the fridge, and carpet cleaning and a range of other add-ons. For a detailed list of what's included in each package check our Whats Included page. Feel free to leave additional notes in your account during checkout, or contacting us to provide instructions for the cleaners.
In our booking form you can select to remove rooms from the clean if you dont want them included.
If your house is 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms select this initially, then tick the Part House Cleaning Only check box. You can then choose areas of you house you want to remove from the service.
No you don't need to be home during the service.
Some customers do like to be home for the whole clean, some prefer to meet their cleaning professional first then get them to lock up when they are done.
As long as our cleaners have clear instructions on how to gain access into your home, we will take care of the rest. Many of our customers prefer to schedule their clean during the workday, so they can come home to a sparkling clean house.
There are no lock in contracts with Sparkle and Shine. You are free to cancel or reschedule whenever you want so long as its not within 48 hours of a booking.
Last minute cancellations and reschedules cause our cleaning professionals to lose valuable work hours. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please do so at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation fees.
